You and Me and Us and Them

Opinion: We’re not so far apart, despite all the noise out there.

Like a lot of people, I’m pretty scared right now, even if the people closest to me don’t know it. Our retirement is in jeopardy, and so is our income. We don’t have health insurance. I’m going a little stir crazy. My hair is way out of control. I cry when I see what the doctors and nurses are going through (I used to cry at dog food commercials, but I haven’t seen any of those lately). I don’t know what the hell is next. And, like many people, I’m hoping I don’t get or give that deadly disease.

Don’t get me wrong: I count myself among the fortunate. I haven’t yet had someone close to me die from this thing. I’m not a first responder and I’m not an exhausted healthcare provider and I’m not suddenly unemployed and, and…

And I’m not alone. My concerns are your concerns, everybody’s concerns. Sure, you might view it all a little differently, even a lot differently. Maybe you think we should open the economy and step on the gas. Perhaps you’d prefer we all just stay home until this is over. Or maybe you’re somewhere in the middle, perhaps even conflicted. But tell me you’re not a little worried, not in need of a little more connection and a little less friction, a little more love, a little less hate. Maybe you, too, could use a good laugh.
