I'm guessing some people are very content to be gone when they're gone, to truly step out, retire, and move on to other things. I have a hard time — even in retirement, I just keep writing and editing. It's so in my bones, and I enjoy it. But, to your point, I stepped clear out of management and the C-suite and, as the world changes and the profession changes, there are no doubt lots of young people who not only deserved the chance to be managers and execs but will serve the current moment better than I.
