Glad you brought that up. Specialized publications and genres (and audiences) definitely make longer headlines less problematic, so long as one sticks to clarity and appropriately "simple" language — which might include a somewhat broader or specialized vocabulary suited to the audience, right? A publication FOR educators, or for chemists, and so on, would take liberties that a headline-writer for a general audience should not.
