Fair question Matthew, and the short answer is yes, deaths per diagnosed Covid-19 case are declining, and that’s due to at least two factors, as I explain in a few other articles I’ve written, including this one: “Part of the explanation is that treatments are likely improving (though there’s no hard data on this yet, multiple epidemiologists have pointed out),” I wrote. “But another reason is that while the virus ran rampant through nursing homes early on, a higher percentage of infections since summer have been among younger people, who are less likely to die from Covid-19.” Meantime, I know of no reputable infectious disease expert who has suggested the coronavirus is moving toward extinction; if we let it run its course, it has miles to go (and millions to kill) before it sleeps. Already deaths in nursing homes are ticking back up, a sign that when lots of younger people get the virus, older folks will, unfortunately, follow.
