Clearly this article has touched some nerves. I appreciate the frustrations of well-meaning doctors and other healthcare providers who agree that physical activity is an important potential remedy for many mental health conditions, and who are weighing in on the challenges of getting people to move more. I did not intend to point a finger at all doctors, and absolutely the responsibility falls on patients to undertake any exercise regime a doctor might recommend, whether as a primary prescription or in conjunction with other remedies. Somewhere in all this is a great need to achieve a better mix of suggested fixes (prescriptions) and actions (effort) to help more people deal with stress, anxiety and depression without so much reliance on medication as the only go-to solution. The fact that we're discussing the challenge is, at least, an important start.
